Croydon's Towers Open, July 2022

At last and after much delay, the world’s tallest modular buildings (think big Prefab) has opened many of its apartments for rent in Croydon.

The two towers, known as the Ten Degrees development, consist of 44 and 38 storeys in George Street, opposite East Croydon Station.

They house 546 apartments and make a truly outstanding visual feature on the skyline. The development was struck by huge delays over the last couple of years not just from covid, but from Croydon Council’s failure to sign off on the tower’s building regulations.

Even today not all of the apartments have received sign off and it has been reported that various issues remain with the difficulty being that tenants have paid advance deposits to move in.

Labour led Croydon Council was bankrupt last year after realising £1.5 billion of debt had accrued with the need for central government to appoint a rapid response panel to oversee “significant failings in leadership and management”. Spending has been cut on all but essential services.

Croydon’s building control department seems to be functioning now and flats in the £180 million development are on offer to the market with one bedroom units from £1,450 per month and three beds for £2,195. Gym, roof terrace and mezzanine garden are all included.
